“Getting to know you…”
is a new series we’ll be running on the blog to spotlight members of our AWESOME community here at CF801!
This week, we are…
Getting to know…Heather Johnson
Stesha: Heather Johnson, give us a snapshot of your history with CF801. When did you start? What is your athletic background? What is your favorite movement and your most challenging movement?
Heather: I started at Crossf801 almost 2 years ago. My friend Tiffany, who also goes to 801, suggested that we try it out. We had both been in and out of Boot camp but it was getting to expensive and just not working for us. I don’t really have much of an athletic background before Cros. I played soccer when I was younger, but stopped when I was about 14. My favorite movement is probably the dead lift, and my most challenging is definitely the strict press.
Stesha: You recently finished the WHOLE30 challenge. How was your overall experience? Whole9, the company that created Whole30 says that this program is not just another weight loss diet, but a lifestyle change with the benefits of feeling, looking, and performing better. How did you see yourself change in those 3 areas?
Heather: I loved doing the Whole30. Don’t get me wrong, it was definitely challenging at times, but the benefits were well worth it. My workouts got better, I have more energy throughout the day, and I also started getting leaner. Which is always a bonus.
I loved that I went to the workouts feeling energized and ready to get at it. My recover was much quicker as well. I wouldn’t be as sore after workouts. I have also never slept better. I used to wake up at least once every night, and now I sleep the whole way through and wake up feeling refreshed. I also fall asleep much quicker where I used to toss and turn before being able to fall asleep.
Stesha: What was your thorn? What did you struggle with the most? and do you still struggle with “it”? What did you do to overcome the struggle?
Heather: I think the hardest thing for me was when I was working at the bar. I used to always munch on fries and onion rings and all those other delicious, greasy bar foods whenever I worked at night. I started making sure I brought snacks with me that I could eat to work so that I had something to eat and wasn’t so tempted. That helped a lot. Then after awhile it got easier. I still don’t eat the greasy bar food when I work anymore, (most of the time.
but its still tempting. I just try to always make sure I have something healthy with me. If I’m not prepared, I usually fail.
Stesha: You have been doing some supplemental work with Matt. What were your goals when you approached him? Have you seen measurable improvement?
Heather: I met with Matt because I (was) still unable to get a ring dip, and its something that I’d really like to accomplish. He gave some extra work to do and it has definitely helped. I haven’t retested my ring dip yet, however I can already tell a change. My static (<–not sure if this is the right word?) dips have gotten better and I can already do more than I used to be able to. Its really helped a lot.
(Editors Note – Heather did retest both her dips last week. She improved on dip station from 1 rep to 3 and did get her first ring dip!)
Stesha: Congratulations on finishing the RAGNAR race!!! How did you feel during and after the race? Was it a challenge to eat clean while being crammed in a van for a few days?
Heather: Thanks! The RAGNAR awesome. I had such a good time doing it. I was a little nervous at first running a long distance in a short period of time, but it was great. I think the endurance class I took with Brandon this summer helped a lot with keeping a good pace and time. It was definitely hard to eat clean stuffed in a van full of people. And to be honest, I didn’t. I had the best of intentions trying to, but I was the only one in the van who even knew what “eating clean” really meant. I ate pb&j’s, banana’s, Builder Bars, jerky, and pretzels. Not really the best food. It kept me full while we were running, but I definitely felt it after that. It felt good to get back and start eating better again.
Stesha: Lastly can you give some advice for those who are 10 days into the challenge or even thinking about doing it,on how you are going to tackle the holidays and all the temptations that come with it.
Heather: My advice is to make sure you keep your fridge stocked with food and have things that are easy to grab. Its much easier to give into temptation when your starving and don’t have any healthy options. Bring snacks with you to work so that your not tempted to grab those holiday cookies. And just keep in mind thats its only 30 days. You might even be half way there by now. Stay strong!
